Dino Ariis
with Piero Stefanutti — Filmmaker & Oral Historian, Carnia, Friuli
For over four decades, Dino Ariis has documented the vanishing voices of Carnia —
WWII survivors, partisan fighters, and ordinary families whose testimony exists nowhere else.
Working with researcher Piero Stefanutti, he recorded these witnesses in their native
Friulian, a language UNESCO classifies as "definitely endangered" with fewer than 600,000 speakers.
These films are not re-enactments. They are primary sources — the last generation to remember
the Cossack occupation of Carnia, the partisan resistance, the Nazi reprisals, and the devastating
aftermath that shaped Friulian identity. When these voices fall silent, only these recordings remain.
